Speaker 1
Welcome to the sisterhood, Your soul showed up for a reason.
Speaker 2
OK, here we are.
Soul Fire Sisters episode 2 we’re calling it.
Can edgy and sacred live in the same space?
Hey, Mary.
Speaker 1
Hey, Dawn.
And definitely they can.
I believe they can as well.
Speaker 2
Well, we’ll dive right into that.
And just to let everyone know, we are recording on a gorgeous summer day in my backyard on the patio with one dog sleeping next to us and the other dog sleeping inside and lots of birds in the background.
Speaker 1
I’m hoping everyone enjoys the chirping and the birds and can bring in really that sunshine.
There’s a little breeze, too.
Speaker 2
We’re going to be very happy to listen to this in the dead of Minnesota winter, right?
We’ll be like, oh, my God, Totally.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And also.
So if you’re not hearing the birds and the rustling of the leaves, it’s because we got new little microphones that are supposedly, you know, getting rid of some of those extra sounds that we don’t want.
So anyway, we’re really happy to be here with you today.
And we love this topic.
We really, truly do So.
Speaker 1
Well, I think it’s like the question really is what do we mean by edgy?
Questioning Norms: Authenticity as Sacred Spirituality
And what do we how do we define the sacred?
And the edgy is on the way that I look at it is questioning things being being on the edge of things, maybe pushing the envelope, really opening things up.
That might not be a popular thought right now or might be not as reverent that people think.
But we really want to go there with with the edgy piece.
What do you think it means?
Speaker 2
Well, I think it means a number of things for me.
It’s, you know, you, you think about being inside the box, right?
And what I was hearing you say is being on the edge of that.
I’m questioning who created these boxes to begin with and why do we have to stay in any kind of a box?
I really do think that being edgy to me is actually being authentic.
What some people would call edgy is being authentic.
And so by that, we were talking a little bit before we started recording about the idea of questioning religion, for example.
That can be an edgy thing to do.
Questioning different systems in a country, that can be an edgy thing to do.
Speaker 1
In particular, if you, your support or your family may it that might not be a common viewpoint, then it definitely is.
Speaker 2
Then it gets it.
Speaker 1
Gets really edgy.
Speaker 2
And when we get edgy, we also need to embrace courage within ourselves because I call that in my book, I called it sweaty palm truth telling.
That’s where sometimes we are saying things that make our palm sweat a little bit.
But being as honest as we can be from our own perspective, to me is the most respectful thing we can do with one another.
And some people are saying, and I believe this could be true, is that authenticity and being real is the the highest form of spirituality.
So that’s an edgy thought right there, right?
Speaker 1
Absolutely.
And I think that with the sacred, what we mean by that, how we define sacred it is it’s being in harmony and balance with your true essence, who you truly are.
And it goes back to what you said, Don, is a being authentic, being really true?
Who you truly are is the best way to honor the sacredness of our beautiful universe and nature.
And we’re out here in this with the beautiful lilac trees and the setting and hearing the birds chirp.
It’s just really nice, yes.
Speaker 2
Yes, and the little water fountain in the background that the birds not only take a bath in, they actually lift up their wings and take a shower under the part that the water is like the little waterfall part.
So that’s really quite lovely.
We’re watching that happen right now.
So this idea of sacred, I, I feel like that needs a little more discussion because some people think of sacred as one particular way that sacred means holy and that it’s only for certain people to be that way or certain ceremonies like in a church or something like that, that, that that’s sacred.
But to me, looking around this yard and seeing these leaves, the color green to me is feeling very sacred right now.
Because it’s life.
I’m looking at life.
Yeah, I’m actually looking at life and that feels sacred.
Speaker 1
Absolutely.
And actually the you’re a person’s whole life could be sacred and it could be almost in ceremony where that you’re being mindful, you’re being authentic, you’re be living in balance and harmony and feeling grounded that sacredness does come out and combining that with edgy because you are being authentic and truly expression expressing.
Speaker 2
Who you are?
Speaker 1
Might push the envelope for some people and they would consider that edgy.
Speaker 2
Yes, yes.
And our goal here is not to make people feel uncomfortable, but it is to be true to ourselves because at the end of the day, that’s all we really have.
And we are in and moving further into a very, very high vibrational field.
We just listened to Pam Gregory talking about, you know, frequency and how if we are living in a lower vibrational frequency, and by that I mean fear, lack, confusion, hatred.
Speaker 1
Anxiety.
Speaker 2
Anxiety, right?
Then we’re going to have a very different experience of the world than someone who is feeling, you know, joyful and clear and creative.
And you know, And so to me, those above the line attributes that I just mentioned, those are the things that feel can feel sacred, but also the below the line attributes can as well.
Because we talked a little bit yesterday about shadow work.
Some people call it that.
Some people think of it as healing the wound within us or trauma from within us.
So it’s all sacred.
You know, what is that song?
It’s a wonderful world where the gosh, I would have to look up, look up the words, but it’s something about the sake, the dark sacred night or something like that.
You know, the beautiful day and the dark sacred night totally have those words wrong, but it’s something like that.
And to really see that our very attention on something makes it sacred.
Speaker 1
Yes, yes.
And really becoming one with nature and with the universe, really carrying that through with your sacredness and, and then and, and really going deep to understand who you are and the role that we have here in this wonderful world as we’re all moving into a new energy.
It’s some people maybe call it a new world.
Yeah, New Earth and.
Speaker 2
Really.
New era, new.
Speaker 1
Era definitely we’re, we’re moving into a new era and it, it is really with that edginess and that being bold and being able to really explore yourself and becoming sacred with that.
Speaker 2
Well, and our tagline for this podcast is wise ass auntie.
Energy or energy.
Not energy, but wisdom.
Wise ass Auntie wisdom, right?
Isn’t that what we’re saying?
And by that we mean we’ve been around the block many, many times.
We are in, you know, a very beautiful part of our lives where we’ve collected a lot of wisdom over many, many years.
And we just thought it might be fun to have a conversation.
These are the kinds of conversations we have when we’re not recording every.
Speaker 1
Time I tell her I’m like we should be recording this yes, and we’re hoping you’re enjoying to to listen in and send us your comments.
We really want to hear what you’re thinking too, but we hope you enjoy what what we’re talking about and as we’re enjoying this beautiful day.
Speaker 2
Yes.
And the other thing is, you know, we’ve given you some of our ideas about what we think edgy and sacred is.
What do each of you think about?
Like how when you hear the word edgy, what do you think of?
And when you hear the word sacred, what do you think of?
And can those two live in the same space?
So yeah, just think about that for a second.
Honestly, when I first would hear the word edgy used, it was always somehow in regard to fashion, like an edgy haircut or edgy makeup or an edgy outfit or something like that.
But it can, you know, for our purposes, I think we’re talking about things that are either on the edge or breaking completely out of that box.
Speaker 1
Really breaking the mold, breaking that pattern, something that’s holding you back.
What think about how you could be edgy and really go out there and in a respectful way, but also being edgy to to move your sacredness forward.
Speaker 2
Oh, I love that.
Yeah.
It’s a really, really good way to think of it.
Yeah.
So out of the norm.
Don’t conform.
We had written those in our notes to.
Really.
Like, why do we think we have to keep living in ways that we’ve been told to live without allowing our own lived experiences create the lives that we want?
Many of us are saying no thank you.
We’re going to do this differently because the way we’ve been doing it is all about control.
It’s either, you know, family control, in some cases even friend control.
It’s about societal control, cultural control, religious control, governmental control.
It’s like, no, thank you.
We would prefer to be our own authority of our own lives.
And that does require embracing both the edginess and the sacredness of who we are.
Speaker 1
And actually it it’s it could be they can live in really in harmony because it’s balance, edginess and sacredness and really being balanced with it.
What out of the norm and don’t conform really can be to question why are you moving forward with something if it maybe doesn’t resonate or it’s something that is no longer serving you?
Maybe it’s a little frequency and you want to raise your frequency and we’re hoping that that’s where you kind of lead into with your edginess.
But it’s it is it’s it is kind of like taking really an evaluation.
Were you told about this?
Is this something you’ve thought about and that if it does resonate well then go forward with it, that’s OK?
Speaker 2
Absolutely.
And what does it always come back to?
Awareness.
That to me is the most important thing we can do on our self discovery journeys or journeys of awakening is to be aware.
To be aware by asking questions like does this fit me anymore?
You know, does this thing that I’m doing, is there a purpose to it that I deem valuable, or am I acting because someone told me this is how I should be?
Speaker 1
Absolutely, and we see a lot of that happening right now in the mentality of groups and how our society is and where things are going.
A lot of it is more of a group mentality than if the person paused and stopped might think, hey, this does not make sense.
It’s not congruent, it’s not In Sync with where I want to be sacred, where I want to go forward my authentic self.
Speaker 2
Absolutely, absolutely.
And you know, we go back to the question, who created these rules for us and what purpose did they do they have?
Speaker 1
And I think don’t you think they’ll be in a little edgy here is don’t you think it was to get us to conform for society to kind of control the Yeah.
And I think that’s come out in research is the fact that yeah, these rules and religious governmental is to get groups to conform.
And we’re saying, where do you feel like you want to be go differently or you want to break out a little bit outside that box?
Speaker 2
Yeah.
Speaker 1
So that you can be your authentic self.
Speaker 2
Absolutely.
It is all about authenticity.
And then Speaking of edgy, we are going to go down the path of the Madonna horror complex, which is a biggie.
And I remember, I guess because of all of my Catholic upbringing, when I first heard that phrase, even though I am a very enlightened, advanced person in regard to those old religious days, I remember feeling a certain kind of like guilt that I was saying Madonna and horror and the same.
But that’s exactly what we’re talking about.
You know, the edgy and the sacred is like, can they live in the same space?
And that was a way to control women too.
Is like to say, oh if you dress this way or act this way, then we are going to as a society say that you are a prostitute or a.
Speaker 1
Whore or a slut?
Speaker 2
You know, again, a way to control, but if you are, you know, a mother and staying home and taking care of the home, I’m not knocking that.
I did that myself.
But it’s like, why are we pitting groups of women against one another and saying this way of life is the right way and the one that’s accepted by society that you conform to?
And of course, a lot of women are breaking out of that now, but I think it’s still in our energetic DNA.
Speaker 1
I would agree.
And I think it’s it, it’s in our historical perspective, you know, I, it’s still much more acceptable to get married, have kids then to maybe stay single, not have children or be married and not have children, of course.
But it is really like when you see things in social media or read things, it seems like the norm.
So in within that box is Mary, Marriage and Children.
Speaker 2
And especially in these times in the United States, that is being pushed by time, you know, and making it really hard for women who don’t want that as their choice.
So, but that’s OK.
That is, I believe that is a temporary thing.
And we will move beyond that.
And one of the ways we move beyond that is by keeping our own.
You hear us talk about this a lot, keeping our own frequency high and remembering to stay aware and to be the authority of our own lives.
You know, that is when it gets really, really big.
So I’ll read this quote that Mary and I found.
According to Astra Adara, the Madonna Whore complex describes a phenomenon in which a man cannot reconcile his attraction to a sexually expressed woman with his programming around what women should be.
A mother, a sexless virgin, a symbol of chastity to project his will upon.
The Triple Goddess is the maiden, mother and Crone.
This archetype group is a divine feminine expression of the phases that women pass through in their initiation through life, youthful birth, giving and wise woman.
So how have we been defined and who do we let define us in that regard to Oh.
Speaker 1
Absolutely.
And you know, I think we’re that they, the tapes run in our minds of, of the, the definition of who we are.
It starts with our family.
And so as a young girl and then as society and culture comes in, just reinforcing those stereotypes, being thin, looking a certain way, acting a certain way, not being assertive.
And if you are assertive, it’s aggressive.
And I can remember when I was growing up, if I had any, any emotions that it was labeled hysterical, which of course my brothers didn’t have their emotions being labeled hysterical.
So it is really interesting how those those cultural expectations or demands just get programmed in US.
Speaker 2
Yes, yes, they do, until we wake up and say this is not serving me.
And I realize as I read that last quote that that is a very binary way to look at women.
And yet if we go further and Mary, do you want to read the second part of what we had written there?
Speaker 1
The Madonna horror complex is harmful because it imposes A restrictive binary on women living, limiting their sexual expression, agency, and freedom.
Women may feel pressure to conform to one of these stereotypes, leading to anxiety, shame, and confusion.
This perspective also perpetrates misogynistic beliefs and can contribute to violence against women.
And you know, I, I think that I, I really think that you’re right.
It’s like we’re, we’re really opening up a new edgy way of looking at gender.
And I only, and I say edgy because it’s new.
It’s really pushing the envelope and edgy in that way with the non binary of really looking at gender on a continuum or fluid and that.
An individual can be anywhere within male, female and so on.
Speaker 2
Yes, absolutely.
And I love that freedom for people to express.
And that’s one way that we can express our authentic selves.
And there’s so many others as well that I, I’m starting to see and I, I’m really loving that.
And you know, we are both reading or have read The Golden Future by Diana Cooper, and she talks a lot about that idea of fluidity in all things and that we accept one another as we are Now.
Not everybody is at that place of acceptance yet, but that doesn’t mean that we should hold back from doing what we feel it what we’re led to do.
Speaker 1
Well, and also we know all movements, whatever type of movement, social, political, always had those edgy type of people out front leaning that way, pushing that energy, pushing that on and that the rest of the community and society comes along.
And that we do that with great mindfulness and sacredness and and being able to work on balance and harmony with ourselves.
Speaker 2
Well, I guess we’ve come to story time now.
Embracing Authenticity: From Baseball Caps to Temples
And Mary, you were going to talk about.
Yeah.
Speaker 1
We were just talking about gender roles and expectations and one of my one of them where I was more of a young adult.
And I, I think this is interesting because it does highlight how some things have changed.
And this is a really basic story and there’s more in depth that we’ll we’ll go into later.
But when I started traveling to Europe and internationally, it was unacceptable for women to wear baseball caps.
And I, and I like to wear baseball caps back then.
And we’re talking, I don’t know, maybe 30-40 years ago.
And now it’s a given.
It’s a, it’s like you can travel anywhere in the world and women are wearing baseball caps or well, not, not everywhere, by the way.
So I want to take that back.
Speaker 2
Yeah, cool.
Many places.
Speaker 1
But most places, especially in European countries, women are wearing baseball caps and I and, and what that has to do is with embracing the being non conforming, being authentic to yourself with how you want to express yourself and what you want to wear.
So I’m, I’m actually, we, we have a long ways to go, but I’m pleased with how far we’ve come also with women being able to express themselves, but we still have a long ways to go as well.
So I just want to say that, but with the baseball caps, it was just something very minor that I noticed and really remember that was limiting.
And now that is that has changed.
And like I said, that’s a basic example.
We’re going to go deeper into different things, but I wanted to share that one because I remember that one as a young adult.
Speaker 2
And So what was considered edgy?
Yes.
Speaker 1
Edgy.
A baseball cap.
Can you believe?
Speaker 2
It, yeah.
And so I don’t know, Would you consider it sacred now if you widen the definition of the sacred?
Speaker 1
If we did with being authentic who you authentically are, then that would be it then.
We love that.
Speaker 2
I love that.
Yeah, I guess my story of the edgy and the sacred would be when I spent 21 days in the silence in India being taught by enlightened monks.
The days few days before that program and after I spent in Chennai, in India and then in New Delhi and so I was blessed to go to many temples and 1 temple that stands out is something I will never forget.
I walked in and there were carvings into the walls of these demons and monster looking scary looking beings.
And then right next to that would be like a mother embracing an infant.
And then there would be like this angelic looking being and then there would be just like a monster looking thing.
And I remembered looking so confused.
I’m like, this is a temple.
It should be all air quotes.
Good.
It should be all sacred, you know?
And I’m not sure if what I’m describing is edgy, but it felt to me at the time because I didn’t think those two things belonged in the same space, you know?
And so I remembered afterwards, one of the women who had been working with a tour guide that, you know, the few days before that she had had the same response.
And she said something about, well, the philosophy here is that life is a combination of all of the things.
It’s not just all the good or all bad.
It’s not all you know and and how everything can be seen as sacred in one way or another.
Speaker 1
Absolutely.
The whole whole experience of life here on earth is a sacred ceremony.
And so that is so true.
That’s really true.
The ‘Truth of Me’: Living Your Soul’s High-Vibe Purpose
So we are going to say a few words and then we would love for you to do a little something for yourself.
The truth of me practice.
And so before we do that, when we live as our confidence selves, we we just get happier because then we’re being authentic.
We’re at one with ourselves, right?
Speaker 1
You’re in the flow and things come to you.
You know the saying we’re the winds against your back or you’re you’re, you know, going downstream.
That is a metaphor for you’re in the flow seeing your authentic self and you are living your soul’s purpose.
Speaker 2
It increases your confidence and your sense of peace and and self worth as well.
Speaker 1
Increasing that frequency, your energy and that’s what John and I want to do is help you increase your frequency, live a high vibe life as we wish that for everyone listening to this.
Speaker 2
Yes, we do.
And by the way, we’re not just saying, hey, you guys all do that.
We are working on this all the time.
And you know, we’re getting pretty good at it, but it takes, you know, awareness and practice.
And, you know, I was just thinking as often as we say, you know, raise your frequency, raise your, you know, have a higher frequency.
It could be like a drinking game or you give yourself 1/4 every time we say that or whatever.
Donate 1/4 to your favorite charity because you’re going to hear it a lot because.
Speaker 1
This.
Speaker 2
Is the way to create the golden future is by you being as happy and peaceful and fabulous as you really are?
Speaker 1
And we’re going to give you tips and we’re going to do have exercises and check insurance and ways that give you ideas of how you can raise your frequency as you’re listening to us.
Speaker 2
And we got one for you now.
We borrowed this one from Doctor James Dodies book Mind Magic where he had one of the exercises and I highly recommend the book.
I think you read it too, didn’t I?
Speaker 1
Married it, yeah.
Speaker 2
And one of the exercises is where he has you fold a piece of paper, you know, vertically and in half.
And then on the left hand side, you can write, reflect on something that you were told was outside the norm and something that you were doing or you maybe still are doing that just doesn’t feel like it fits you anymore.
So take a minute and write as many of those as you can think on the left hand side.
Do you want to add anything to that, Mary before I tell?
Speaker 1
Step 2 No, it and it’s something that that like it’s outside the the the norm outside the box, edgy feels.
Speaker 2
Old to you maybe?
Speaker 1
Even feels.
Speaker 2
Like it doesn’t fit.
It’s like, you know, it just doesn’t fit anymore.
And then on the right hand side you write down.
Speaker 1
What what I’m now fits what where you are now becoming more authentic and more your true essence, your true self, and that brings you into alignment with yourself, with your true essence.
Speaker 2
And every episode, we will make sure that we have a truth of me practice so that you can constantly be looking at who you are now and how you want to express in the world, because that is exactly why we are here.
So anyway, I think that’s all we’ve got for you right now for.
Speaker 1
Listening farewell for now.
Speaker 2
Beautiful, we love you have a lovely lovely.
Speaker 1
Day Bye everyone.
Hey Soul Fire Sisters, we hope you’ve enjoyed this episode.
Please share Soul Fire Sisters with your friends.

Speaker 1
Our world needs your passion, your gifts, your heart.
Don’t wait, do it now.
Whatever your it is, do it now.
Speaker 2
